While students can breathe, this can be short-lived since the entire contract between UMFA and the institution expires on March 31, 2021. While students no longer have to worry about a strike during the fall semester, there is no guarantee that 2021 will not have the same challenges. The contract between UMFA and the university expires on 31 March 2021. The University of Manitoba Faculty voted by a narrow majority on Friday to accept the school`s final contract offer, following an interim agreement reached earlier this week. Students at the University of Manitoba (U of M) no longer have to worry about a possible disruption during the fall semester, as the faculty and school finally agreed not to strike. UMFA members will vote this week on the ratification of the agreement. Negotiations were conducted on a “wage re-opening” clause in their current collective agreement, which emerged after the unconstitutionality of the Public Service Sustainability Act. The university and the union representing their faculty reached an interim agreement on Monday that diverted strike action that could have begun the next morning. The deal was announced Monday morning, meaning members will not go on strike tuesday. This agreement is a far cry from UMFA`s initial request for “a fairer payroll, a modest wage increase for the 2020-21 contract year and additional assistance during the pandemic for people with dependent responsibilities.” UMFA members receive a one-time payment for additional work caused by the pandemic caused by the new agreement between UMFA and U of M.
The agreement offered by the U of M includes a one-time covid-19 grant of $1,950 and a zero per cent increase depending on the province`s demands. UmFA also retains its rights to take legal action against the effects of the unconstitutional law on the sustainability of public services and a guarantee for wage discussions in collective bargaining. The faculty association did not give details of the deal, but said earlier in the week that the university would not accept a pay increase. The current UMFA collective agreement expires on March 31, 2021. As part of the interim agreement, a COVID-19 grant is awarded to members to recognize their work since the beginning of the pandemic. The University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) voted earlier this week by a narrow 55 per cent margin to ratify the union-school agreement. UmFA had negotiated wages since August with the U-M administration, the period of its collective agreement, called the opening of wages or salaries. Despite repeated requests for binding arbitration, the administration opposed binding arbitration, but accepted mediation. The University of Manitoba Faculty Association said that less than 55 per cent of its voting members voted in favour of ratifying the agreement, which involves a one-time payment for recognition of the extra work done during the covid-19 pandemic. Despite UMFA`s demands for binding conciliation by third parties, an agreement was reached through mediation on Sunday. The agreement has yet to be ratified by UMFA members. Each section of the knowledge and use of your collective agreement lays out the basics and practical steps that are important to members so that they can maintain the principles for which we have fought through collective bargaining and strike action.
